How To Care For Indoor Tropical Plants
Most people would derive pleasure from having indoor tropical plants because they can brighten up any room. They add color, beauty, and a sense of mystery wherever they are because they look exotic and they are a sight to behold. But then, taking care of them can be really tricky. They might not last long if not given the proper care, especially if it is your first time having them. So, if you want to have indoor tropical plants all the time, you need to know everything you need to know to make sure that you take care of them and to make them last long. They can be expensive as well, so it pays to make sure you exert an effort in being aware of how to maintain them.
You need to keep in mind that just because they are "tropical" plants, you need to always subject them to direct sunlight. This is a big NO-NO. Why? Too much exposure to direct sunlight can eventually burn their leaves, more so if the sunlight passes through window panes since the glass will magnify the intensity of the heat. To avoid this, make sure that you use curtains and make sure to avoid sunning them too much.
You should not also give your indoor tropical plants too much water. Why? Too much water will make their roots rot, ultimately leading to death. The right time to water them would be when the soil they are planted in feels dry when you touch it. You can use tap water from if you do not collect rainwater, but you need to make sure that you let it sit overnight to make sure the chlorine evaporates. You need to also make sure that you place them somewhere where humidity is ok since tropical plants thrive in humidity. If not, then make sure that you mist their leaves for at least once a day.
When it comes to fertilizers, indoor tropical plants should be handled with extra care. Make sure to choose fertilizers that are high in nitrogen since nitrogen will help promote plant growth. Also, it should have phosphorous for proper root development, and potassium as well for proper growth. Take note that the best time to put fertilizers on them would be during spring, but of course, a couple of times in a month should be maintained.
As for all types of plants, proper plant care does not merely include watering, sunning, and fertilizing them. You also need to be knowledgeable enough about plant diseases and should always be on the lookout for them. Among plant diseases, the most common would be fungi. This is caused mainly when you water your plants too much and do not give them enough sun exposure as well as you expose them to extremely humid environment. Telltale signs of fungi would be grayish substances in the soil and spots on the leaves. You will also notice a shriveling of the tips of their leaves. Make sure that you have a fungicide handy to remedy this.
